Bloomsbury Football Academy U7 Gold Boys 7 vs 1 London Thames

The only word to describe this game: domination. We dominated our offensive and defensive 1v1s, we dominated in our half and in the opposition, and we dominated the score line. Haru got us off to a flying start with a close range finish, after a scramble around the penalty area reacting the fastest to a loose ball and slotting home, after the team applied tremendous pressure to win the ball high up the pitch. Chiaki followed this with 2 goals at close range, getting himself into perfect positions both times, and finishing tidily on each occasion. For Chiaki’s first goal, a huge amount of credit must go to Djibril who received the ball near his own box, before running the length of the pitch and beating 3 players along the way, before playing a perfect pass to Chiaki to score! London Thames got a consolation goal from distance before half time, but Djibril made it 4 with the last kick of the half, weaving past a defender and shooting across goal to cap a sensational first half. The second half was more of the same. Isaiah beat his man before calmly slotting home, Theo struck well from distance and Djibril got another goal after some more individual work. An incredibly positive first game, which sets a high bench mark for the rest of the season.

The celebrations at the end encapsulated the team spirit on the day. Lots of goals, energy and positivity, and all of the immense effort each player put in was rewarded with a sublime win. Incredibly proud of the players, and superb debuts for each of them.

Player of the match was Djibril Ali, who played a flawless game, with 2 goals and 2 assists to show for it. Djibril was calm on the ball at the back, effortlessly beating pressure and driving the team up the pitch, often beating multiple opposition players on his way. All players were in with a shout for player of the match, and set a very high standard which we will look to build upon this year.

Our work on 1v1s was apparent, as the ball carrying demonstrated by all players was superb. Often players would pick up the ball deep, draw in a defender, then burst past them with a fantastic change of speed and direction, one of our key focuses so far in training. Haru, Chiaki and Djibril all did really well to draw pressure, then exploit the spaces which opened as a result. The players were all comfortable engaging in defensive 1v1s too, and notable mention to Theo, who was able to dispossess the opposition countless times and launch counter attacks as a result!

Starting to understand structure when out of possession is our next step. Often players would all chase the ball or not hold their position. But completely expected for their first game, and a fantastic way to start the season.

Bloomsbury Football Foundation U8 0 vs 3 Touch SA

This was our very first game of the season. I hadn’t met the kids yet, nor had a session with them, but they understood what I wanted from them during the game. Everyone attacked, everyone defended and showed respect for both the opposition and teammates. The first half ended 0-0 with lots of chances falling our way, but didn’t materialize on the score board. We showed great intensity the whole game. In the second half, we were unfortunate with the opposition taking advantages of small defensive mistakes, scoring a goal very early on and two more in the remaining 5 minutes of the match. My favourite part of the match was seeing the energy and intensity from everyone. It was on point.

Karter, voted by the players and myself, was the player of the match. From my point of view he added excellent levels of energy and intensity when on the pitch. Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to work with them before this match on the raining pitch, but more things are to come. To improve we’ll need to be more organised and understand positioning on the pitch.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U9 Gold Boys 2 vs 3 London Soccer Stars

A game full of ups and downs! Goals from Louis Vara and Paulo Morales Sarria in the first half looked to secure a brilliant result. Unfortunately, quick fire goals from their side put us down 3-2 to finish the game. My favourite moment was when Charlie Berry used different types of skills to get past three of the opposition. James Galiler would be my player of the match, constantly communicating with his teammates, giving information and being a danger whenever he was on the ball. His skills created our first goal and was close to creating more wonderful goals.

Training was focused on in and out possession and how this impacts our formations for this block. The boys understood how diamonds can impact different types of passing options and they used this in the game. If we can understand how to build from the back to create chances this week we can better ourselves for our next fixture!

Bloomsbury Football Academy U10 Gold Boys 2 vs 1 Camden Youth

Tight game of many chances. Great fight and character from the boys to keep the game under control. Marcelo bagged two goals even though he got injured. He came straight back on and played with his usual flair like nothing happened, player of the match. Incredibly hard worker and great communicator. He epitomised resilience.

Focusing on creating triangles all over the pitch in training led to passing options everywhere. Decision making, knowing when to pass and when to dribble will see this group progress to the next level.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U10 Girls 1 vs 1 Marylebone FC

Bloomsbury started off exactly how they finished the last match, on the front foot. 2 minutes into the first half Maisie scored a brilliant goal, almost impossible for the goalkeeper to get to. After the goal Marylebone FC were motivated to get a goal back, with possession mostly in Bloomsbury’s half. Although there were some great tackles made, Marylebone FC scored just before half time to level the score. Both teams went back out in the second half wanting the win. Marylebone FC were awarded a penalty just 6 minutes into the second half which went narrowly wide of the post. With the opposition having possession, two wonder saves from Alexandra kept Bloomsbury in the game. They then went on to have 3 big chances themselves, as they were encouraged to push forward and play more on the front foot. Both teams were fighting hard in the final moments to get a winning goal, however the determination of them both to constantly win the ball back was a defining factor in the game which ended in a 1-1 draw. The reaction from Bloomsbury after Marlyebone received a penalty was great to see. The girls didn’t let this affect them, they kept their heads up and pushed on until the end.

Neveah wins player of the match for her showing at right wing. Running into the right spaces and passing the ball into the box to create some big chances for the team. The girls were all making accurate passes throughout the game to progress up the field, a key facet of our training this week. Next week the team could push higher up the pitch as a team when in position to minimise the space the opposition has to play in.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U10 Girls 16 vs 0 Omonia

Bloomsbury came out fighting in the first half, with most of the possession with them. Aiva broke the deadlock 7 minutes in after pressing high and winning back possession off Omonia. This was followed by a superb goal from Piper not long after. The first half continued in Bloomsbury’s favour, with Aiva scoring 4 more goals and Maisie scoring a wonder goal from outside the penalty area. In the second half Omonia came out with an added desire and showed some real skill. However, Bloomsbury did not step off the gas, with Aniera and Eti joining the scoreboard with two dazzling goals. My favourite moment was the spirit of the team from the get go. Even thought Bloomsbury were a few players down in comparison to Omonia they did not let this change anything, they played on the front foot from the get go and still believed they had a good chance to win.

Princess-Aiva wins player of the match, not only for her double hat-trick but also due to her constant pressing and winning the ball back which set the pace of the game throughout.Training massively impacted the game this week. After focusing on pressing during the week the girls really took this on board. They did not allow Omonia much time on the ball, which inevitably resulted in a lot of Bloomsbury’s goals. Now we hope to carry on the way we played next week.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U10 Black Boys 0 vs 0 Active FC

Tight game. Bloomsbury with chances to win the game in the final 5 mins. Luck was just not there today. A well worked move from the back starting with the goalkeeper almost ended up in a goal for us. Nathan was our player of the match this week. Great feet on the right wing and always making the correct decision. In training we worked on playing out from the back and we could see the triangles being formed in those scenarios. Ruthlessness when scoring and composure on the ball will see us improve greatly in the weeks to come.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U11 Girls 2 vs 0 Omonia

An excellent performance from the U11s in their opening GSL fixture! A big thanks to the four U10 players that played for us straight after their game: Alex, Princess-Aiva, Ettie and Aniera! It was great to see all the players more composed on the ball today! Out of possession we were very solid and I don’t think there was ever a situation where I thought we would concede. The girls were great at organising themselves to ensure we were covered, always putting pressure on the ball. Poppy opened the scoring for us with an 8th minute bottom corner finish after winning the ball high up from a goal kick! Then, in the second half, Noa played a lovely pass to Mila who rocketed the ball into the roof of the net to secure the win in the 39th minute! A very convincing win from the U11s!

My favourite moment was seeing the linkup between units which nearly led to a goal. Under pressure from the opposition the girls made correct decisions to pass and dribble the ball up the pitch. It was great to see principles we’d worked on in training come out in the game! Player of the match for us is Bakita today. She was super solid in defence, and was great at getting the ball up the pitch. Her organisation of the players in front of her was strong and her positioning was brilliant. She never fails to amaze me and Alice!

We’ve recently worked on playing forwards where possible to get up the pitch rather than playing direct, and the girls showed they had paid attention in training as they were brilliant at playing the ball through the thirds today. This week, we will work on more out of possession principles like pressing to allow us to win the ball higher up especially from goal kicks.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U11 Gold Boys 17 vs 0 New Salamis

The game started in a frenetic fashion with both teams unable to keep control of the ball. Christian then scored the first goal through some great team play and a cross. For 6 minutes after this there was a lack of control in the game for both teams. New Salamis saw a couple of chances go wide, whilst their keeper also made some great saves. After Edgar clinically scored the second goal, we were able to press them high and keep the pressure on scoring multiple goals in the process. By the end of the first half it was 8-0 and fully deserved. At half time we were able to rotate the team and change players and their positions. This allowed for greater opportunity for players to try new things and have the freedom to express themselves. What was most pleasing was the amount of different goalscorers with each player wanting to set up another teammate to score a goal. In the 2nd half Marlei and Flavio scored the pick of the goals with the game ending 17-0. Some brilliant team goals were scored, finished by Flavio and Bastian in particular..

Edgar White demonstrated a high level of leadership talking to both the defenders and attackers and driving the team forward. Deservedly our player of the match. We were able to play through the thirds by passing it into the spaces and having our defenders drive forward with the ball, just as we worked on in training. Defensively we need to be aware of the long ball over the top better by positioning ourselves more effectively across the back. Here’s to a hat trick of 17 nil wins this time next week!

Bloomsbury Football Academy U12 Gold Boys 1 vs 8 Whetstone Wanderers

Tough day at the office against what was a very strong Whetstone Wanderers side. Despite the scoreline, we remained competitive for most of the game but eventually caved in due to a mixture of key injuries to our goal scorer and goalkeeper, Oli and Hiwaad, as well as struggling to match the physicality of the opposition. They say that every loss is a lesson, and both myself and the boys certainly learnt a lot from this one. Primarily, that playing on our pristine 3G carpet of Saracens High is a completely different ball-games to Whetstone’s cratered excuse of a pitch. We’ll learn to adapt our tactics and game-style in favour of a more pragmatic approach, readying the boys for the harsh realities of grassroots football. Disappointing day to say the least, but I remain committed and dedicated to turning things around for the boys. Hiwaad’s top bins save was a highlight of the game. It kept us in the game during a barrage from the opposition in the first half.

Player of the match was Maxi. He never stops running and personified the ‘never say die’ attitude. As soon as he gets his brother’s growth spurt, teams will be running scared. Disappointingly, what we worked on in training was seen on the pitch. I prepped the boys to encourage the opposition to build by standing off and then setting pressing traps to force turnovers. But Whetstone were more acclimated to the conditions so knew better than to engage in buildup. To improve we’ll need to hone in on the engaging part of 1v1 defending: getting low, being lighter on our toes and using our arms to impede the opponent without conceding a foul. We also need to work on our reactions during defensive transitions to block the centre of the pitch.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U12 Black Boys 1 vs 5 Pro Elite

Frustrating game all around unfortunately. The score line doesn’t reflect the heart and desire the boys showed to win, having multiple chances to score just ultimately not falling for us. A tough test against a very, very good Pro Elite side who I believe are contenders to win it all this season. The team gave a great account of themselves with great passing patterns and forward runs opening up the opposing defence. Players such as Ezekial showing his brilliant pace and strength to beat the Pro Elite left back and finishing an excellent move, firing past the keeper. Favourite moment of the game has to be Edward van Dorp’s stint in goal where he made some absolutely fantastic saves. cat-like reflexes.

As such he was our player of the match, displaying composure to drive forward with the ball from defence and help create opportunities for the team on top of his goalkeeping heroics. This week’s training impacted the game by implementing our passing shapes such as diamonds and triangles, and at times these showed through into the game with us moving up the pitch with quick well timed passing moves. Next week we can be better by wiping the slate clean and moving on and showing Sunday’s opposition how good the BFA U12 Black team can really be!

Bloomsbury Football Academy U13 Girls 2 vs 3 Barnet Panthers

Bloomsbury started strong with some good link up play in midfield that led to O’miya having a shot bounce off the post. However, Bloomsbury struggled to keep this momentum up and 10 minutes in the visitors grabbed a goal. The girls picked themselves up and came close to grabbing an equaliser a few minutes later when O’miya ran the length of the pitch and crossed the ball which led to a shot that was narrowly put wide. The visitors kept their pressure up and secured a second 18 minutes into the game. In response to this, 22 minutes in, Bloomsbury found some momentum with Jet hitting the bar before Janet struck the back of the net a minute later to take the score to 2-1 going into half time. Bloomsbury started the second half how they finished the first and started to test the opposition keeper more with Jet finally getting a well deserved goal 34 minutes in to take the score level. Unfortunately for Bloomsbury the score didn’t stay level for long with the visitors grabbing a third goal 38 minutes in. The rest of the game remained competitive and physical with Bloomsbury having a few good chances including a free kick, however it wasn’t meant to be and the game ended 3-2 to the visitors. The visitors had found themselves in good form and were set to make it 4-2 when Musique tracked back and put in a very good and important last minute tackle to stop them in their tracks.

Coaches player of the match was Esther for important and non stop defending throughout the game. Players player of the match was captain O’Miya for amazing all round play during the match. This week we had good numbers at both training sessions which helped us to prepare the entire squad for the game. Next week we need to understand when to press and when to delay, critical in making sure that space behind us is not exploited.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U13 Gold Boys 1 vs 2 AFC Youth

We had 20 players at training on Thursday which was great to see but this performance really showed that we hadn’t played a competitive match in a long while. Although many of the team never gave up we were missing the basic awareness of offering a good angle off the ball and passing accurately into feet. Coaches player of the match went to Annabel for some amazing saves and Jet, who’s engine did not give in as they kept on going! Players player of the match went to Emily for a similar reason – always tracked back and made some excellent tackles. The first half we started slow and conceded early but after that moment we dominated for a period of the game. Going into halftime we looked on top and we came back out raring to go. Soon after the restart Jet scored a great goal, after a quick corner, firing it low into a swarm of defenders. AFC had a few great runs and scored from one to make the score 2-1. Ela, on her debut, had excellent chances and was unfortunate not to assist a few more goals too. Well done everyone involved. A narrow loss… we go again.

The best moment of the match came deep in the first half when we were playing our best. We played all the way from Eleanor in defence to a link up between Ela and Jet but then the final pass across goal was narrowly missed! Great build up play though. As mentioned last week we ALL need to track back better!

Bloomsbury Football Academy U13 Gold Boys 2 vs 4 Panthers

A difficult game for the U13 boys who went into the game with 10 players, missing our goalkeeper, Morgan, due to him injuring his collarbone at training the Thursday before the game. As a result we had four players volunteering do a shift in goal throughout the game. Despite these difficult circumstances the boys went into the game confident that they could still put in a performance and come out of the game with three points. We started quite slowly. Panthers played better football as a whole in the first half but we went in at half time winning 2-1 thanks to a finish from our striker Rupert Robinson, and then quick feet from Freddie Littner winning a penalty. Calmly dispatched into the bottom right corner by Freddie himself. Just like the first half we started the second half slowly and ended up conceding three goals early. Credit to the boys that, although they mentally struggled in that 15 minute spell, they regained their will to fight and created numerous chances to get back into the game. Major credit to our front three, Rupert, Freddie and Zander, who were a constant threat with their ability and work rate. Helped by the midfield and wing backs. On another day, the boys would have taken more of their chances and won the game 5-4 but our beginning to the second half led to our downfall in this game. The boys will learn from that.

My favourite moment was when Zander got the ball on the left wing with 3 players pressuring him to win the ball back and he displayed immense confidence and composure to do a Maradona 360 between three players. Then to combine with Rupert with a one two on the edge of the box which nearly led to an incredible goal.

Sami Ayettey & Luke Bahia were our players of the match. Sami did not stop running the whole game, overlapping non stop and carrying the ball yards on yards on yards. All of this on top of his defensive duties as well. His work rate and standard of play throughout was excellent. Luke Bahia was upset with tears in his eyes when we went 4-2 down. But his bounce back after this moment was amazing, putting in five superb challenges and not allowing the fact that we were 4-2 down to impact his performance in a negative way. Instead, he raised his level and played even better.

At times we showed glimpses of the possession and positioning focus we had at training. We were not consistent enough with this throughout the game. We have worked on embracing pressure and playing around it, and in this game we were pressured throughout. But at times we did not deal with the pressure well enough. Continuing to work and being consistent with certain aspects of the game in and out of possession will be key to our success. This paired with keeping the correct mindset throughout, regardless of what happens.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U13 Black Boys 2 vs 5 Omonia Youth Gold

We were missing two key players so we knew it was going to be a difficult game. However, it started out great. The team applied a lot of pressure, even managing to score early. The scorer of the first goal was Everett. The opponent managed to equalise and this was how we went into the break. In the second half we scored early again, this time it was Eben who applied the finish. But once they equalised again the team lost morale and confidence which resulted in a 5-2 loss. Overall, given the circumstances it was a good performance by the players My favourite moment was when the match finished. We faced a heavy loss and the boys had a lot of pressure. But even at the end everyone was happy, they were proud and had tried their best and everyone was proud of their efforts, including me. We fought till the last minute and we tried our best.

Player of the match was Everett. He managed to score a goal and once again his performance was class. He did not stop running, and helped the team in any way possible. He would defend, attack and support anyone on the pitch. An overall top performance. The players tried to establish what we’ve learnt in the sessions. They seemed to have all the information in their minds and they tried to execute them. Overall, training had a positive impact on the game. There is always room for improvement, even for us the coaches. I believe we could work on our defence and learn how to work together as a team when we defend. Also, one thing that needs to be reinforced is the communication between the players.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U15 Girls 1 vs 4 LFS

The girls worked incredibly hard even with the horrible weather. They did not give up until the final whistle which shows how determined they were to score. They worked really well in terms of their communications which was at its peak in the second half creating an amazing goal by Tally. Overall, the girls worked as a team and showed that they wanted to play and their red faces after the game reflected how well they tried and how much it meant to them.
I am so proud of them as this is the first game of the season and I hope this level of intensity keeps up. My favourite moment of the match was the build up to the goal. The girls were battling so hard to win the ball and you could tell they wanted a goal by being physical and scanning constantly which we have worked on in training the last couple weeks. Caroline managed to storm her way through the centre midfielders, setting Tally up with an amazing through ball where Tally trapped it in the bottom corner. I’m also proud of them as this was one of the topics we have been working on: ‘building the attack’

My player of the match was Hannah. She was a beast in centre back putting in aggressive tackles and making sure nothing got past her. I also made her captain today and she took full responsibility, making sure the other defenders knew what they were doing as well as organising our players when corners were being taken by the opposition. Hannah has been excellent in training, learning new techniques and skills. The fruits of her labour were shown today.

This week’s training sessions have been focusing on how to defend, communication and positioning. This made a huge impact in the game as the girls were communicating to each other, making it a lot easier for everyone to know where they are. Positioning was another big one, especially when it was our goal kick which they demonstrated beautifully. We can do better next week by being more aggressive when it is a loose ball, whether it’s in the air or on the floor. All their goals came from the girls allowing them to have too much space and time or watching the ball when it’s in the air. The girls identified this which shows that they are aware of when they need to work on as a team.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U15 Gold Boys 0 vs 7 Isledown Wolves

After a fantastic start in the CIYFL last week, the U15 Boys couldn’t replicate their performance on Friday vs. a disciplined and physical Isledon Wolves side. BFA struggled to piece together patterns of play, with the lack of a recognised GK standing out in particular this week. Despite a tough loss it was nice to see the boys still battling to the end.

Mark demonstrated the energy, passion and determination I expect week-in, week out, and was unlucky not to shorten the margin of victory on multiple occasions. A poor attendance to Wednesday’s session meant that a key defensive concept surrounding sticking together as a unit wasn’t fully understood by all in the match day squad. Being on time and punctual is one thing, but being ready to play is another, and this week this team took an age to get ready to warm-up which in turn led to a shortened warm-up with less touches etc. We started the game slow, which I feel was directly impacted by our poor preparation.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U15 Gold Boys 2 vs 5 Whetstone Wanderers Leopards

Very much a tale of 2 halves, we entered the half-time break at 2-2, definitely deserving the lead after demonstrating some fantastic play in possession. We remained compact and reduced the distances between our defensive players to ensure the opposition couldn’t easily play through the thirds. Debutant Mark capitalised on a mistake by the opposition GK to steal the ball and slot home to level the game at 1-1. Mark also bagged a long range strike after winning the ball high and in a dangerous area tied the game once more. I was very impressed with our patient play, recycling the ball when required in order to rebuild attacks. This led us to creating multiple opportunities. On another day, we may have converted these chances to take a lead into half-time. BFA dropped off in the second half, struggling to maintain the energy and efficiency that was on display in the first half. This led to some poor decision-making which in turn led to some lapses defensively and offensively.

Lamek, in his first game for the team, was our player of the match. He showed composure in possession as well as a desire out of possession to turnover the ball. He communicated well within a relatively new team. This week, we worked on reducing the gaps between both defensive and midfield lines. I felt that overall, we applied this to our game and in turn were able to prevent the opposition from penetrating us in key areas of the pitch. Ensuring that we maintain our levels of desire, concentration and willingness to perform throughout will be critical for our success, as well as being more clinical in front of goal.

Bloomsbury Football fOUNDATION U15 bOYS 2 vs 1 whetstone wanderers

It was new beginnings for under 15 Foundation; their first ever competitive match. Under the management of Abdullah. It was a shaky start to begin with but our individual qualities showed through. Both goals were counter attacks with two delightful passes from the midfield through to the attacker. Overall, we were technically stronger and defended better. The opposition attempted long balls but they couldn’t breach our defence. A lot of positives to take out from the game, especially with a younger squad. The only way is up now. Looking forward to seeing the boys grow individually and collectively. My favourite moment was Artem dribbling past two players on the left wing. I really enjoyed watching him entice the defender and beat him.

There were a lot of players who could have been player of the match but have to give it to our goal scorer Luca, who scored two goals. He was a fantastic as a striker. The defenders did not know what to do with him. The opposition manager swapped defenders several times to deal with him. The changes had no effect. Prior to the first match we worked on moving the ball to wide areas to build the attack, where our goals came from. We want to improve moving the ball through the thirds and having composure on the ball to look for the correct pass.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U16 Girls 6 vs 4 Impact FC Girls

Great start to the CIFYL, the girls brought energy and what they’ve been learning in training. It’s brilliant to see what the coaches have implemented on the pitch. Karina continuously pressing and scoring a beautiful goal from a right angle was great to see.

Alexia was our player of the match, greatly impacting the team with her positivity and style of play. She showed leadership and resilience on and off the pitch. In training we’ve been working on shape, formation and scanning and marking your player. This was evident in today’s match. If we keep working on shape and how to get into position and be aware of our surroundings we will continue our upward trajectory.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U16 Gold Boys 1 vs 2 Hackney Juniors

A tough game against a totally different style of football to our own. Hackney were very effective when playing direct and their target player was a menace all game. The game was competitive and aggressive, and I felt our tackling technique left a lot to be desired. We failed to get ahead of the ball and tackled from awkward angles far too often, gifting the opposition multiple fouls. Eventually we succumbed to their barrage of set-pieces. Elijah did well with a powerful finish in the 11th minute to level us at 1-1, but we failed to capitalise on this. We performed much better in the second half, and could have scored a few goals, but we lacked composure to finish our chances. Surprisingly, my favourite moments came in the second half, when we failed to convert our chances. Although we didn’t manage to put the ball in the net, the number of chances that we created (in different ways) was very pleasing to see and made for an exciting second half.

Our POTM goes to Callum Rahman. His energy and enthusiasm off-the-ball was the perfect example of what we look for when defending. He is an example to his teammates in this regard and the energy Cal brings to the team is one of our greatest assets. This week we continued our work on our off-the-ball principles, and in particular: directional pressing. We worked on our high-press strategy and how we can support our front pressers through effective team-shape and compacting the pitch vertically. We faced a team that did not build from the back, and so our defending style had to totally change. They completely bypassed our press and presented new challenges for us to find solutions to. Our energy and effort off the ball was excellent, but we needed more composure in the tackle and a better understanding of how to combat the second ball.

We now have a better understanding of how to manage a team that plays longer into a target player. In the future, we will look to go player-for-player against their front line and will compact the space in front of their target player, aiming to reduce the effectiveness of the second ball. We will also adapt our 1v1 defending style to be more proactive when defending runners beyond the striker.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U16 Gold Boys 3 vs 1 Northwood

We took control of the game really early in both halves, scoring within the first few minutes of each half. This was especially pleasing as our intensity and energy was set from the very first minute. We were energetic off the ball and our pressing had improved from the first game. In possession, we were positive and looked to play forward often, and our wide players were fantastic in taking space and attacking fullbacks. We limited the opposition to a small number of chances, and recovered well when we had to turn and defend behind our backline. My favourite moment from this game is totally non-football related. It’s all 6 foot something of Ellis trying to squeeze into an XS shirt because he forgot his…priceless. The lad could barely breathe! Elisha also made a fantastic save, tipping a freekick onto the bar and dealing really well with the rebound under pressure.

I’m going to give our player of the match to Beckett. He was instrumental in everything we did and was great to watch on the ball. He was calm under pressure and grabbed himself an assist as well. A really solid performance. This week we continued to focus on our directional pressing principles. We looked at our high-press strategy, where we force the ball into the fullback, lock the line and force back inside toward our compact press in midfield. This was effective at stages and we won the ball a number of times close to the opponent’s goal.

We can continue to improve our spacing and team-shape when pressing. At times we didn’t squeeze the space around the ball quick enough in our press, which allowed them to play through our midfield. We need to remember to be horizontally and vertically compact ahead of the ball when pressing. In possession, we still need to recognise when to recycle/disperse the ball away from pressure, as we often went back into trouble. A little tweak, but it will allow us to be much more composed on the ball and attack their weak side more effectively.

Bloomsbury Football Academy U18 Gold Boys 3 vs 2 Fusion

A real display of teamwork! Due to registrations and injuries, we were left with no goalkeeper as well as no substitutes heading into the game against arguably the strongest team in the Friday Night League. Special mention to Luca who took on the responsibility of going in goal. Every single player put in 110%, taking the lead twice, courtesy of a couple of fine strikes from Alexey. The team kept its shape out of possession really well, denying Fusion any real goal scoring opportunities (their first equaliser coming from a dubious penalty shout). Despite conceding late in the game, we still found a way to work our way right back up the field to find a winner. Kamran with a back post header, his second in 5 days to win a match for BFA!! Massive shout out to defensive work put in by every single player!

Player of the match for me was the TEAM! Putting the team first and playing for each other and for the result! Alexey with 2 goals takes it otherwise. Working in small spaces in training definitely helped with our close control and speed of play. If we maintain effort levels and team spirit at training sessions we will be unstoppable!

Bloomsbury Football Academy U18 Gold Boys 3 vs 0 Alexandra Park

Truly a game of 2 halves. A game where we absolutely dominated the opposition Our midfield trio of Tristan , Luca and Luke controlled possession and set the tempo of the game in the first half. We simply could not find the back of the net despite creating more chances than we could count on two hands. Our shape off the ball and better technique on the ball meant that we completely nullified the opponents threat. Our goalkeeper, Ridon, maybe touched the ball three times the entire game. We finally found the breakthrough however early in the second half when Hyseni turned to slot in his second of the season. This was quickly followed by goals from Tristan and Luke, both following good build up down our left flank, to effectively kill off the game.Tristan’s goal was a highlight, after filling in at left back to get on the end of a cut back from Luke, after his marauding underlapping run from deep in his own half.

Player of the match was Luke. Goal and assist in the second half capped off a dominant display. His capability of playing in multiple positions is a real credit to the team. Fitness sessions in the hall showed across both games with our ability to push on late in games through to the final whistle. At times our passing accuracy let us down, so focusing on timing and weight of passes and runs to more effectively produce attacking combinations
