BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL foundation U8 boys 2 vs 4 London Futsal Stars

Back on track after a well-deserved Easter break, the boys were eager to play despite not being able to train together for a few weeks. The first half started slowly for us. I took the opportunity to swap players around, making them play in different positions to help them understand different roles and responsibilities. This, however, had the expected result of a chaotic first half, and we found ourselves down 0-3 at halftime.

The second half began with everyone back in their most familiar positions, and we played a much better half. Maxime scored our first goal of the day, and Sufian added another near the end of the match. The final score was a 2-4 loss, but we can take some positive outcomes from a strong second half, which we effectively won 2-1 if we consider the two halves separately.

My highlight was how the first half score didn’t stop the team from working hard in the second. Sufian was our player of the match, not only for his great solo goal in the second half but an outstanding first half in goal making a few great saves.

There was no training as we were back right after the Easter holidays, and you could see that. To improve we need to keep working on our understanding of several positions on the pitch.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL Academy U9 gold 4 vs 7 The Vale

It was really a hard game with a high tempo which required a lot of physical efforts. The boys faced a lot of pressure at the beginning of the match and were struggling in moving the ball into the centre of the pitch when the opponents pressed high. When we were out of possession, the defensive line was not compact enough which gave the opposition space to dribble the ball through. With 3 goals conceded in the first half, we encouraged the boys to attack the space left behind by the other team and that gave us more chances to challenge the goal keeper.

There were a couple of quick ball movements from back to front which contributed to goals scored by Rocco, Charlie and Teddy. And we were very close to level the game again when the score was 3-4 and 4-5. However, the opponent seized a few counter-attacking chances to double the lead again and kept it to the final whistle. But the boys’ performance in second half was impressive and we were satisfied with the attacking style they presented.

My favourite moments were in the second half when we successfully won the ball in the middle of the pitch and played to wide options on both side to create 1v1 chances.  The striker made good movements in between defenders to receive the ball again and shoot at the edge of the box. Player of the match goes to James. As the CB, he worked really hard to stop the wingers and strikers, covering the space left by his teammates. He had a high success rate in 1v1 defending today, made several key tackles and was very strong and smart in using body to block opponents.

The focus this week was on positional play, but it did not show too much in the game as we didn’t keep the ball for long time and the positioning lacking when more defensive duties were added into the game. We need to practice more on ball movement under pressure to quickly find space and release the ball into that area.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL foundation U9 gold boys 6 vs 0 City Of London

A great game to welcome us back to Market Road football pitches. A physical team in City of London fought hard and possibly got away with a few tackles by the ref. Early goals gave us a comfortable lead allowing us to keep the ball and not really having to push on too much. However, this didn’t stop the boys in the second half continuing to put shots at the keeper scoring a couple more to make the game 6-0! Goals from Luca x2, Roka, Rocco, Ezekiel, James were the difference makers for the game. Shoutout to James Gallier for standing 20 yards offside and just getting passed the ball! The beautiful game.

My favourite moment was when Ezekiel was playing centre back and was just pacing himself casually. I asked him what his best traits were and he said speed/dribbling and I asked him why he hasn’t tried it yet. He then preceded to skill their striker with a nice turn and passed it out wide to lay it across the box for our first goal.

My player of the match has to go to Luca Sidhu, his impact and hard work in training has shown in the games scoring 2 on the day. Both goals came from him crashing the goal (getting in the 6 yard area when the ball is wide) which is something we’ve practiced in training. No one was picking him up as he was disguising his runs which was another thing we practiced in training.

Last week’s training was based on playing through the thirds with a focus on how we played from the defence to attack. Throughout the game we looked comfortable in doing so creating some of our goals from these areas. This week, we are looking into our defending in the thirds. I think the way we press is good but sometimes can be beaten through or around it and I would like us to work on this.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL academy U10 gold boys 2 vs 2 PFA

We were the stronger side through the whole match. The boys were able to play out from back with confidence and be brave to take on players when the ball progressed to the other half. Teddy, Nabil and Brian had several chances to open our account, but unluckily not able to seize them. Maxi also made a couple of saves to keep us in the game.

Although we conceded 2 goals in the first half, we didn’t change the way we played. In the second half, the boys made a great come back with James hitting a powerful shot beating the keeper and Charlie scored a goal in the box following some excellent teamwork. If there were another 5 mins given, the boys probably could have grabbed a win instead. Happy to see boys have that strong mentality and determination to turn the game around.

My favourite moment was the second goal we scored. Ismail made a great off ball movement from far post to near post to receive a short corner kick and quickly passed the ball into the box, where Charlie was free from defence and scored a goal with first time finish. The goal showed great ball movement that we are looking for through the season. Player of the match goes to Ismail. He was confident on ball and made good decisions to keep the ball moving into promising areas.

The boys moved well to occupy space and showed more good decisions by passing the ball either through or around the defenders, rather than being greedy on individual dribbling. We need to improve on the quality of the pass to create more chances moving the ball into the final third.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL academy U10 girls 2 vs 1 LFS

This was a fantastic game from all the girls. Everyone was very focused and showed high energy. The passing was very impressive and led to multiple goals and assists. We played as a team and got a great win over LFS. Princess Aiva beat several defenders and scored a fantastic goal and Maisie also scored an amazing goal out of the right side of the pitch. Both players were ready to shoot and received very helpful passes from the back from our defenders and wings. This game showed me that the things we are working on in training are translating to the pitch, and if we keep working, we will be even better.

I had many favourite moments from Saturday’s game. The girls were communicating with each other and working together. We also showed great sportsmanship which is something I am very proud of as a coach. A few times the opposing team’s players fell over, and multiple of our players went to check on them. This is so important and really made me proud. The girls were also so supportive of each other, especially when Princess Aiva and Maisie scored – great support from all of the team.

Players of the match were Clara and Maisie. Clara was very aggressive and kept pushing forward with the ball. She had a few very close attempts on goal, showed some very skillful dribbling, and called for the ball. Maisie pressed their defensive line the entire game and scored a cracking goal in the top pocket which came from being ready to shoot and score. I also want to give a shout out to Ettie for playing in several positions that are not normally hers to support the team. She showed great leadership as our captain, and was also very key to making sure everyone was communicating.

We have been working on several things like corner kicks, good passing, and getting goal side. Overall, I saw all of these things translate on the pitch, but we can always improve, especially on being goalside. The goal scored by the opposition was a result of not being goalside, and the girls are aware of this. Next week, we can make sure we really nail being goal side, improve on releasing the ball sooner, and also making sure our last touch is not too far ahead of us. The girls know all of these things are things that can be improved, so I am confident we can work together to make this possible. Well done, everyone!

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL academy U11 black boys 6 vs 1 BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL foundation U11

The aim for the U11 Black team is to win the Coram’s Cup after the disappointment from last year (Coach is still rattled about this)! To get into the semi final we had to beat a team we knew well – The Bloomsbury U11 Foundation team. There would be a derby to get through in the Cup.

The team was coming into the game with confidence and with a desire to win. We started off strong causing the keeper to make saves from Fallon and Marlei. Even if defensively we didn’t have too many issues both Lachlan and Flavio did well defending and driving into the space in front. We broke the deadlock through our first bit of clinical and quick decision in front of goal. Fallon winning the ball back high up the pitch, laying it back to Amir who took a touch out of his feet and buried a shot into the bottom corner. We continued to keep the ball and dominate possession but without taking or creating the chances. Right on the stroke of half time we doubled our advantage with Amir again scoring. This time showing composure to take it past a defender and then the goalkeeper and tapping it into an empty net.

At half time we spoke about the intensity and the speed of movement both with and without the ball. The second half could’ve gone two ways – either falling flat and letting them get back into the game or playing our football and scoring more goals.

Within two minutes it was 3-0, Andi playing a great through ball to Moaz who finished into the bottom corner from a tight angle. It was then quickly 4-0 with Andi firing in a finish from the edge of the box. We were now dominating which is oddly where this team struggles. When they find a game easier and have a significant lead they stop playing and think they have already won the game. This is a dangerous game and it cost them with the Dev team scoring a easily preventable goal and our clean sheet was gone.

This kicked the team into gear and they started playing their football again. Marlei scored his customary goal at Coram’s (cutting in from the right and finishing in the bottom corner) and Amir completed his hat trick after a drive into the box and powerful finish into the goal. A well deserved win and into the semi finals we go!

My highlight was seeing, on a couple of occasions, us playing the ball from back to front. Moving from one side to the other! Exactly the type of football I want to see from this team! Amir Bouderbane was our player of the match. Amir scored 3 goals and demonstrated calmness and composure in all areas. Very closely followed by Lachlan turner who was again outstanding in defence.

This week we worked on finishing – even though we scored 6 there were times where we didn’t show composure or rushed our finish in the final third. Even if we are ahead in games we still need to continue playing our football – sometimes we can be too lackadaisical and stop playing, thinking the game is already won.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL foundation U11 boys 1 vs 6 BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL academy U11 black

A very hard fought game against the academy for the Foundation boys, each player giving it their all for the entire duration of the match, regardless of score line. Mark scored our solitary goal. My favourite moments of the match were the numerous defensive efforts by the team that lead to multiple last ditch tackles and well earned dispossessions.

Mark was the player of the match, his constant pressing and hard work both in attack and midfield earned him a well deserved goal, and caused plenty of issues for the opposition.

We have been working on playing out from the back and maintaining the ball to build an attack, we tried this a few times and found success doing it, working the ball out to our wingers to create an attack. A very tough opposition made this a difficult game week, if we play with the intensity that we has in this game we will cause other teams a lot of issues!

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL foundation U11/12 boys 3 vs 1 European FA

Bloomsbury started out on the front foot creating chances and passing the ball around well. The first goal came through Mark in his first 9 aside game, smashing a half volley past the keeper. The moment of the match. Mark soon doubled his tally with another smart finish. Bloomsbury kept on creating chances to score goals through excellent movements. Finally Mark turned provider as he crossed to the back post for Ethan to tap in past the goal keeper.

Player of the match for the U11s was Marley. Solid defensively and played some smart passes. For the U12s it was Joe. Joe lead the defence well, organised everything and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in.

In training we worked on covering the space when a player joins the attack. To improve we can work on delaying and not diving into challenges, especially out wide.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL Academy U12 gold boys 2 vs 2 Camden elite

Has a draw ever felt more like a victory? It may not have been 3 points but given the context of the fixture, this goes right up there with one of the highlights of the season.

Having lost to them 8-0 earlier in the season with no subs and no central midfielders, I left with a feeling of ‘we could actually maybe give them a game if did have some subs/central midfielders’. Well, this time out we were able to fulfil the former but not the latter – with my captain and star man formerly known as ‘Yillinho’ deciding he’d take arms with the enemy, Zizou going to a PGL residential at the ripe old age of 12 (grow up mate) and Yacine deciding he had ‘homework’ to do, at 12 (defo thought we were going to get battered). So severe was the betrayal the boys were under strict instructions to at no point talk to or even reference ‘Yilli, but to refer to him as the number on the back of his Camden shirt—’#17’.

Anyway, enough on the villains and onto the heroes. In what was quite possibly his best ever performance in a Bloomsbury shirt, Maxi stepped up where others faltered as centre-mid. He was disciplined, tenacious and showed examples of really good quality in a player of the match display. His ability to maximise his leg-span to intercept and force turnovers was key in capitalising on Camden’s quite frankly arrogant 1-at-the-back formation. That he was able to commit the defender and give a disguised release for Oli DB to finish was all the better. Advantage Blooms; 1-0.

But it wasn’t just Maxi. Wing pairing Kezza and Elijah, both playing through injury, were sensational. Elijah locked off the left-wing with impeccable work-rate off-the-ball and tremendous quality on it. Word has it that after the match, upon emptying his keys a Camden Elite #17 jersey fell out… make of that what you will. Elijah is showing increasing confidence and quality on the ball: his safe-side carries have shot up and he’s now proving himself to be a two-way winger, with solutions to beat his defender on the left or the right. The next step will be to back himself that bit further to enforce the separation from his opponent and get more shooting opportunities off. Kez, despite starting off a bit nervous, grew into the game with some impeccable 1v1 defending and attacking. He’s starting to realise the full potential of his frame and learning how to exert it—can only go up from here fella. To think I once laughed at the prospect of you on the wing, ha.

Despite going a goal up, Camden are indeed a team of immense quality and had their own chances. Eventually, we wilted with goals coming before and after half-time. Alas, The Bloomsbury boys were undeterred, with the two subs—Kristiano and Zac—replacing our injured wingers both playing their part. Upon receiving the ball under pressure, Kristiano resisted coach Milo’s calls to ’spin!’ (translation: ‘boot it’, tactical gentrification is real), showing tremendous composure and quality to beat the press with an audacious nutmeg before setting up a great chance.

We continued to plug away and show belief to capitalise on transitions, with various counter-attacking and overload scenarios, largely initiated by our rock at the back, Chris. Chris is a player who largely sleeps through the majority of his matches, barely ever challenged. Against Camden, however, he was pushed to the limits and rose to the occasion with a performance of a life-time. He swept up everything that came his way and marauded through the heart of the Camden underbelly. And into the second half, his galivanting runs were finally rewarded with an overload scenario finished off my Zak-Attack. 2-2 Blooms. The goal capped off another great performance by Zak as a #9, who’s finally starting to utilise his considerable physical strength and bully defenders off the ball. Great moment for you fella, keep up the good work!

The game was by no means over, however, as Camden constructed attack after attack. We rode our luck at times (they hit the post, Archie admitted to deliberately hand-balling it away from their striker, Kristiano and Maxi heroics off the line), but generally speaking Camden were met by the resolute brick wall of Archie and Chris. So good were their performances, they were determinedly classified as ‘undroppable’ and defended the goal with their lives. What a partnership forming there.

We managed to hold out get a well deserved point on a special, special evening. A big congratulations to the boys—I challenged them pre-match to rise to the occasion; to enjoy playing against the best and embrace the challenge. On another day, maybe we lose; but on another day with some of our actual centre-mids, maybe, just maybe, we win. That’s the mindset and what we’ll look to take into the new season to challenge right at the top of the Camden & Islington Youth league. Their attitude, application and intensity were all fantastic. The challenge is to now keep those standards high and apply it in everything we do: every match, every training, every drill. Be consumed by the spirit of competition and the desire to win.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL Academy U13 black boys 3 vs 2 Alexandra Park Youth

A top performance from our team where we managed to get the win and played a good level of football given the circumstances. Last time we faced APY we lost 4-1 at their home ground. This time it seemed to be a difficult task for us, since we had no goalkeeper no defenders (left-back and right-back) and only 11 players.

We started with a 3-5-2 formation, starting well, wanting the win. We were pressing, creating chances but we were not able to score. 10 minutes into the match the opposition won a corner from the right side of the field. Once they took it the ball came to the edge of our penalty box and one of the APY’s players managed to touch the ball enough to change its course and deflect it into the back of our net.

We did not let a goal affect our gameplay, reacting quickly. After 2 minutes Kente, with a vertical ball, found Jasper who drove with the ball, entering the oppositions box, shooting and equalizing. We changed our formation to 4-3-3 and we kept creating chances but again the opposition scored from another corner, this time from the left side of the field. Once again, our mentality and our work-rate did not drop, and we were looking for ways to equalize.

After a few minutes our team was attacking with 6 players and we managed to overload their defence. Jasper found himself unmarked out of the box, received the ball and took another shot. Once again equalizing. This second goal got us all fired up and so we kept on pushing and trying for more. Our communication was clear, our passing was point and we completely dominated for the last 15 minutes of the first half. HT 2-2.

During half-time the players were instructed to keep their performance up, focus and work until the final whistle.

The second-half started the same as the first one; us pressing, creating chances and trying to find opportunities to score. Whilst the opposition tried to defend. Our standards were really good and after a couple of minutes into the second-half our team created a 4v4 counter-attack. Eben played a great ball to the open space for Jasper who drove with the ball, entering the penalty area. His shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but Elliot was there to take the rebound between two defenders, slotting home and giving us our first lead of the match. Our whole team celebrated as they really deserved this goal.

The rest of the match was difficult for us, because as previously mentioned we were unable to sub our players and rest them so, some of us were really tired,. But we kept on going and worked until the end. The opposition understood that we were tired and used this to their advantage, pushing us to our limits. They had a lot of chances and they got to our penalty area easily, but our defence and our goalkeeper were truly superb and so they were able to keep the one goal advantage until the end. FT 3-2.

After the match all of our players were exhausted, but happy with their performance. They deserved this win more than anything and they were reminded to keep that positive mentality and playstyle going forward!

My favourite moment would be after the match, where we had a chance to discuss with the players if they were happy and proud of their efforts. All, despite being tired and/or slightly injured, answered positively and that is the one thing we are taking from this match: our performance, attitude and work-rate. Player of the match was Ozan, who had to play as a goalkeeper since we did not have one, and his performance was exceptional.

In the training before the Easter Break, we’ve talked about about our possession, pressing, and decision making and how to improve them. Our team was able to establish those principles and show character and that is how we got the much-desired win. We still need to improve some areas, such as intensity in and out of possession, being more direct when it comes to a 1v1 situation and always looking for better options.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL Academy U14 boys 2 vs 6 Whetstone Wanderers Lions

Bloomsbury started strong, passing the ball well around the pitch with confidence and composure. We built attacks patiently from the back, using goalkeeper Alex and defenders Vinnie, Gavin, Levi and Ayal to play through the first third and into midfield.

It was an even start with both teams creating chances at either end, although Whetstone took an early lead to make it 1-0. The boys reacted brilliantly and stuck to the game plan. The strikers were working well together, fashioning multiple chances to score through great hold-up play from George and explosive running in behind from John. George had a powerful shot from distance that bounced off the crossbar and onto the goal line, and was ultimately saved by the goalkeeper.

The midfield, consisting of Jack and Strahinja on the wings and Jake and Seb (who was making his first appearance after recovering from a hip flexor injury) in the centre, were competing well. Winning tackles and combining in the middle third. A fantastic pass from Jack down the right channel, started a brilliant counter attack. George dribbled towards the centre back and played the ball across to John, who tried to finish with a first time finish but was denied again by the goalkeeper.

The half-time score was 2-0 and we had a big task ahead of us in the second half. Two minutes into the second half saw Bloomsbury win a free kick in the opposing half, 20 yards from goal. Jack confidently stepped up to take it and dipped the ball over the goalkeeper to bring us back into the game.

Substitutes, Manny, Jamie and Luca all put in a huge effort in the second half to bring us back into the game. However, a strong Whetstone team took control of the game, pressing our backline and pouncing on any Bloomsbury mistakes.

With the game at 5-1, the boys were still pushing and giving everything to come back into the game, which saw Bloomsbury win two penalties in the last 10 minutes. John, who was playing his last game with the team, stepped up to take both of them. The first penalty he dragged wide but the second he placed calmly into the bottom left corner. It showed fantastic character from him to recover from the first miss and take his second chance. John has been an important player this season, going on a fine scoring run in 2024, and will be missed by the coaching staff and all of the squad.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL academy U14 boys 2 vs 4 london soccer school

A tough result to take, as we were punished for every lapse in concentration. In the first half we struggled to get going despite being able to create chances, however we found ourselves 2-0 down. A better showing in the second half as we created numerous chances but struggled significantly with our finishing. However, the opposition were clinical and despite feeling like we were the dominant team, they held resolute and defended well, stopping us from scoring more.

Lateness was a significant factor as a number of our players missed our warm up period and went into the game cold. Something we are trying to work on, as one player’s lateness can impact the whole team.

Luca Dawber was our player of the match. Despite the struggles throughout the team, Luca kept his composure and tried his best throughout. He played extremely well in multiple positions. Luca has had a strong 2024 and we are hoping for his great form to continue.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL academy U14 boys 5 vs 1 London Colney Colts

A game of two halves. As a whole in the first half, we really struggled to play our game, rash decisions in and out of possession caused the game to be quite erratic and our usual calm nature in possession was something we were really missing. We struggled to string together passes and move up the thirds in our usual style and out of possession, we were mistiming moments to press and tackle. Going into halftime 0-0, all the players and coaches were frustrated.

At half time, much was said about the quality and speed of decision making, and the final point raised, ‘we only have 35 minutes of 11 a side football this season, how do we want to end it?’

Enter the real U14 Bloomsbury Boys Academy !

The boys in and out of possession looked much like their real selves. Understanding where and when to play the passes, how we want to build our play, and when to take some shots.
Playing with more confidence and fearlessness, we took the game to the opposition.

5 different goal scorers, with 3 coming from quick throw ins and short corners, showed the boys had woken up and decided to play the way we knew we could. Our ability to connect our passing patterns in wide areas was brilliant to see as we have had so much success playing short intricate combinations where the opposition chased us.

The highlight of the match was Jack Orbell’s goal. A quick corner from Jack as he passed out to Yacine, followed by an even quicker set back from Yacine allowed Jack to finish with aplomb, as he curled the ball into the top right corner. Two keepers wouldn’t have saved that! Luca Dawber was our player of the match.  Another excellent performance. First at centre back, he kept us in the game after a shaky first half from the team. His excellent decision making and positioning allowed him to stop all opposition attacks. He then moved into midfield and gave us the composure we desperately needed after an erratic start.

He’s come through in leaps and bounds this season and as our utility man, he’d shown he immense quality and mentality to play in a number of positions.

The previous match left us with extreme disappointment but the boys reacted well to dominate this game and end the season strong. After 3 wins in 14 matches in the first half of the year, we finished with 7 wins out of 9. Truly showcasing not only the quality the team possess, but the resilience to comeback from a tough first half!

To improve we need to continue to hone our qualities as we look to finish the remainder of the season strong.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL ACADEMY U17 BOYS 0 vs 0 BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL ACADEMY U18 BOYS

Once again BFA U17 and BFA U18’s faced off against each other in a key match, battling for the Watford Friendly league. With the U18’s really needing the win to have their destiny in their own hands. How would the U17’s approach it?

The game started off quite cagey, with both teams having come back from the Easter break. Early on, Bilal won the ball just inside their half, driving forward he found Felix in space, but he shoots over the bar. We pressed high and made it difficult for the U18’s to play out from the back. Felix won the ball, laid it off to Bilal who shifted and shot, but it’s saved by the keeper.
We were extremely compact and BFA U18’s found it difficult to play through us.

Cameron cleared the ball long, Lior misjudges the flight and it finds Elliot who tries to lob the keeper but it’s well over. It’s a great tactical battle with both teams cancelling each other out. 20 minutes in Jaydon swipes his clearance, the ball falls to Bilal who shoots but it’s saved by the keeper.

We begin to pick up the intensity and kept the ball well. Naison found Dillon who played a beautiful diagonal to Felix, but his first time shot is over the bar. Marcus won the ball from Filo, who drove forward and shot but its just over the bar. Again. Its been a tight game of half chances for both teams. We go in at 0-0!!!

The second half begins. We start well, but similar to the first half a lot of our attacks are breaking down in the final third. 10 minutes in Jacques finds Markus with a ball over the top. He lays it to Felix who shoots but its blocked and then cleared. We continue to press, Dillon finds Naison with a great ball. He’s 1vs1 with Filo, he cuts inside and shoots wide.

BFA U18’s are beginning to grow into the match, but like us, they are not really creating any clear cut chances. Both teams know each other so well and its showing. 20 minutes into the second half, Saul finds Bilal deep in their half, he shoots from 25 yards out but its straight at the keeper.

The game continues at its normal pace, its going to take something special for either team to win it. Felix wins a free kick on the edge of their box, Oscar steps up and hits it wide.
Last 10 minutes of the match, BFA U18’s switch to a 442, they start to go more direct. Elliot has the and plays a lovely flick to Jaydon, but he shoots wide of the goal. The ref blows the whistle and it ends 0-0!!

Dillion was our player of the match. He really demanded the ball and was dictating the play. We hadn’t trained due to the Easter break. Yet again I find myself saying that we need to be more clinical in front of goal.

BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL ACADEMY U18 BOYS 0 vs 0 BLOOMSBURY FOOTBALL ACADEMY U17 BOYS

We went into this crucial league clash against the U17s in yet another battle of the Bloomsbury brothers. Knowing we needed nothing other than victory to keep the title hopes firmly in our own hands, we set out with a 5-2-3 formation that gave us some flexibility to transition into a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-3 in attack.

Following on from our last match against them, which we felt was a largely undeserved and unjust 3-0 defeat, we knew that if we could nullify their attacking threat going forward this would give us the perfect platform to pounce. I reiterated to the team the importance of scoring first, and believed that if we did, we would win the match!

Our fullbacks did superbly at eliminating space for their wingers to operate in while our midfield kept their compact shape beautifully resulting in very little for our goalkeeper, Ridon, to do in the first half.

The half time message to the team was to be a little bit more positive in their play, with too many sideways and backwards passes. Their fullbacks were leaving tons of space in the channels which our wingers couldn’t exploit and far too often the final pass let us down.

On what was a warm spring day, we rang some changes throughout in order to keep legs fresh following a couple of weeks away over the Easter break, but ultimately couldn’t come up with the correct combination to unlock the U17s defence. We were second to both the first and second balls and our transition from defence to attack was far to slow!

The last 15 mins, with nothing left to lose, and chasing victory, we went to a 4-4-2 with Jaden Anderson partnering Eliot Hyseni up front and it nearly paid immediate dividends! First a chance on the half turn was snatched just wide of the far post before minutes later Jayden again found space in the box before unleashing a rocket that was destined for the top corner but was brilliantly saved by the opposition goalkeeper. Can only imagine the scenes if that went in!

A disappointing result at the end of the day as the league is now out of our hands and even if we win our remaining matches, will be relying on other results to go our way!

We would like to wish the U17s the best of luck in their remaining fixtures – it’s a real credit to both the club, George, Sam and the entire coaching team the level that our players are each striving to achieve, as well as the healthy, competitive rivalry we have developed over the course of the season!

See you in the Cup Finals! Our season is not over yet!

Jayden Irish was our player of the match. The centre half that was utilised as a deep lying midfielder for large parts of this game did a fine job of protecting the back four and constantly tried to affect the game with his positive passing game, just unfortunately had no outlet.

I think the lack of training over the Easter break combined with the warm conditions contributed to the fitness issues we experienced on the day. We will aim to regroup, digest and debrief following the result at the weekend while training will focus on being able to utilise our wingers more effectively.

OUR SEASON IS NOT OVER YET!
